About This Place
First settled in 1605 by European colonists, Nova Scotia is one of Canada’s three Maritime Provinces. Even though it is the second smallest province in Canada, Nova Scotia is the second most densely populated. The province is made up of three distinct sections: the Nova Scotia peninsula, two larger islands, Cape Breton and Sable Island, and over 3,000 smaller coastal Islands.
In the centre of the province, along the southern coast, is the Halifax Metro Region, home to the provincial capital, Halifax. Visitors to Nova Scotia will enjoy a walk through the capital’s scenic waterfront district and can discover its museums, shops and harborfront cruises that sail around Halifax itself or out into the sea for fishing and whale watching. Closer to downtown Halifax, tourists will find some of the best attractions in Nova Scotia, including the Halifax Public Gardens, a lovely area of Victorian flowerbeds, duck ponds and peaceful water fountains. Visitors may also want to explore the Halifax Museum of Natural History and the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame.
Three hours to the west of Halifax is Yarmouth, located in the Yarmouth and Acadian Shores Region, a region that stretches all along the western coast of the province. To the south of Yarmouth is the Cape Forchu Lightstation and the Argyle Courthouse. St. Mary’s Church, located to the north, is the largest wooden church in North America.
Cape Breton Island lies to the east of Halifax. The perfect place to start a tour of the island is the historic city of Sydney. Like most other cities in Nova Scotia, Sydney has a historic waterfront offering a wealth of cultural and culinary possibilities for every visitor to the island. From here, visitors to Nova Scotia should travel along the Cabot Trail which runs from the village of Baddeck up through the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the Acadian Forest. Take the time to travel around one of the best natural attractions in Nova Scotia – Bras d’Or Lakes, an inland saltwater lake with several breathtaking views that will surely please any nature lover.
