About This Place

Other Details
South Portland is a coastal community located in southern Maine. The city is almost 13 square miles, divided into two halves that couldn't be more different from one another. The western half is an industrial and technological hub, while the eastern half resembles a resort town with a beach area and several parks. The Maritime Museum in the eastern portion of South Portland is adjacent to the second-busiest oil port on the East Coast.

South Portland visitors find 350 acres of parks and athletic fields. The Spring Point Shoreway Park, which provides South Portland access to the ocean, features an arboretum on the edge of the shoreline. South Portland tourists who enjoy putting will enjoy visiting the South Portland Municipal Golf Course, a 34.4-acre, nine-hole, par-33 course. Players wishing to have access to the golf course can pay a small daily fee to use the greens, clubhouse and restrooms, and golf cart rentals are available. Willard Beach, due east of the park, is another place South Portland tourists enjoy visiting. The four-acre beach is dog friendly and allows access to the Southern Maine Community College campus, located to the immediate north.

The Southern Maine Community College campus is intricately connected with the economy of South Portland. Students can first attend SMCC and then head to a traditional four-year university, or they can earn a certificate in a variety of career and technical programs including automotive technology and communications and new media. The South Portland campus is located on the site of the former Fort Preble, and many of the buildings on campus are renovated from the original buildings at the military site. There are 45 buildings on campus, an athletic field and a wharf.

Head inland seven miles to find the Maine Mall, a smaller mall with all the standard shops. Abercrombie and Fitch, Macy's, Banana Republic, and H&M are among the mall's selection of stores. Summit Adventures, an Extreme Family Entertainment Center located at the mall, provides a variety of extreme sports simulation opportunities including attractions such as a rock climbing wall, bungee trampolines and laser tag. The mall also has a weekly farmer's market where 10 local growers and vendors get together to sell their fruits, vegetables and crafts. Events at the mall range from charity-sponsored events to holiday-themed events.

After playing on the beach, head over to the Sea Dog Brewing Co., just one mile from the Maine Mall, and taste brews in the traditional English style. The restaurant and brewery offer fine dining and American fare to loyal patrons. Craft beers include Sea Dog Stout, Sea Dog Winter Ale and Sea Dog Owl's Light Head. Because of its location near the mall and just south of the airport, Sea Dog Brewing Co. is a popular spot for locals who want to grab a bite out on the town. The Portland Pie Company, southeast of the mall, is the place to enjoy pizza, Italian food dishes and signature cocktails.
