About This Place
Vermont, a northern New England state, is beloved for its fall colors, quaint inns and charming villages. One of the least populated states in the union, its capital is Montpelier (population less than 8,000). Fewer than 50,000 inhabit Burlington, Vermont’s largest city.
For biking, Vermont’s winding country roads provide an ideal setting. Walkers can catch the Appalachian Trail in the southwest area of the state and continue through the Green Mountains. For spectacular views, look no further than a shoreline cruise of Lake Champlain, situated between the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains.
Vermont’s annual 60 to 100 inches of snow make it the destination of choice for over four million skiers each year. Resort options abound, from the cozy, family-friendliness of Smuggler’s Notch to the double black-diamond runs of Killington.
Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum in Stowe displays some 7,750 ski-related archives and artifacts, not counting the many items that come in pairs. A special section is dedicated to the 10th Mountain Division, a group of local mountain soldiers who served in WWII.
The state is the nation’s leading producer of maple syrup, but foodies will find many other local delights to interest them.
