REGIONAL HERITAGE / PLEASANT REGION Among people with aquired taste, the ,,Hessische Bergstraße" is already well known. As the smallest of 13 winegrowing areas in Germany, the region offers wonderful hiking options and features a variety of sightseeing highlights. Located nearby you will find one of the UNESCO world cultural heritages, the former monastery Lorsch and the museum of tobacco, that opened in the year 1995. The museum presents in 1500 exhibits the cultural history of growing tobacco, which was one of the main economic factors of the region until the early 20th century. During the main period , around 1920, about 200 planters were cultivating approximately 50 hectare of crop area. In 1997 only one farmer was left with 3,5 hectare until at least he gave up as well in the year 2000. All in all for 300 years the region of Lorsch was shaped by the cultivation and manufacturing of tobbacco. HISTORY OF THE HOTEL The architects Landes & Partner in Frankfurt a.M. were inspired by the cultur-historical heritage of the region. Thus, the hotel building empathized from the structures and colors of former tobacco barns, which parcially still can be found in the area. Until 1925, directly after the harvest, during the late summer months, the tobacco leaves were hung up in the basilica of the monestary to dry. Later on barns were built for the treatment of the tobacco leaves. Another reminiscence to this special time period are the half-elliptical windows that reach all the way down to the floor. The profile of the windows mirror the shape of tobacco leaves which gives the hotel its distinctive look and further visually explains the name of the hotel: Tobbaccon. The whole style of the modern business hotel is affected by comfort and a pleasantly warm atmosphere.
