El Karama Eco Lodge is an award-winning, intimate and family friendly eco lodge located on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river on a private working ranch with wildlife of 14,000 acres in Laikipia, Kenya. The lodge is hosted by a team of local professionals many of whom built the lodge and overseen in the background by the owners Sophie and Murray Grant who live here full time with their two small children. This charming lodge specialises in offering guests an intimate, memorable and active Kenyan safaris at an affordable price. El Karama is home to over 80 mammal species including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, cheetah as well as endangered species such as the African Hunting Dog and Grevy's Zebra. We also have over 427 bird species including indigenous species and European migrants at the relevant times of year. The accommodation options here vary: In the main lodge there are 4 bandas, 2 family cottages: The Rondavel and the Hobbit House and 2 brand new safari tents in the little sister camp 'The River Camp'. Rates include fully inclusive full board packages, self drive basic packages and self catering. There is also a natural campsite on the property for small groups. Bookings are taken through the lodge for all of the above. Guests at El Karama have a broad range of activities to choose from and the emphasis here is getting out and enjoying the freedom of this incredible wildlife area. They will be given the choice of guided game walks - including long tracking activities and half day treks all with professional guides, game drives, night drives, bush meals under the stars, fly camping during longer stays, specialized kids activities including clay sculpting, tracking and cast making following in this family's artistic heritage. The working farm also welcomes visits from guests to see the cattle, the dairy and biogas production area, baby goats and calves and the impressive organic garden that feeds the lodge and the ranch. All activities are included in the full board rates. The lodge is run entirely on solar energy and our overall aim as a family is to work closely with the community around us and with our guests to ensure that we preserve the habitat and wildlife of El Karama and Laikipia through responsible eco tourism and sensitive management of our natural resources.
