My favorite super food additions these days are maca and cacao powder. Cacao is a great addition to coffee, smoothies, baked goods… anything that’s made better with chocolate. It’s a little bit of heaven, straight from the Mayan gods.
Peruvians in the high Andes have traditionally used maca root as an energizing food source as well as medicinally. Maca root belongs to the radish family, and is most commonly available in powder form. Grown in the mountains of Peru, it has also been called “Peruvian ginseng.”
I buy mine from Trader Joe’s, for only $3.99 and $4.99.
Cacao Powder Smoothie
I love this super-smoothie recipe that came on the back of the Cacao powder. I use almond butter just because I prefer it (not a big peanut fan).
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 banana
1 Tbsp cacao powder
1 Tbsp peanut or almond butter
1 handful of ice cubes
Blend all ingredients together until smooth and enjoy!
Coconut Cream Energy Bars
I also make these incredible protein bars that taste almost like a dessert; they’re great in the morning, for an energetic pick-me-up throughout the day, or to satisfy a sweet tooth craving — in a healthy and delicious way. (P.S. want to know where I got that beautiful pan liner? Check out Gigibees.com – disclaimer: this is my own store of reusable beeswax wraps. I also use them to wrap my bars in after they’re frozen and ready to eat!)
