John Wayne Airport SNA is an airport in Orange County, California serving the southeast metropolitan area of Los Angeles.  It contains the shortest main runway in the United States. SNA Airport is the second busiest airport in the greater Los Angeles area with 9 million passengers traveling through annually.  Originally started as a flying school in 1923 it eventually was purchased through a land swap by Orange County in 1939.  During World War II it became part the Santa Ana Army Airfield and later was returned to the county after the war, becoming the Orange County Airport. It wasn’t until 1979, shortly after his death, the airport was renamed in honor of John Wayne.
