<p>La Mesa operates three fire stations, and joined neighboring El Cajon and Lemon Grove in January 2010 to form a joint-powers agency called the Heartland Fire &amp; Rescue Department. With Proposition D bond funds, La Mesa rebuilt&nbsp; Fire Station 11 on Allison Avenue downtown in 2006. In March 2010, the city reopened an improved Fire Station 13 at 9110 Grossmont Blvd. on the city's eastern edge. A third firehouse, Fire Station 12, is at 8844 Dallas St. in the northern part of town.</p> <p>Since 2004, every firefighter hired by La Mesa has been a certified paramedic. La Mesa also contracts with American Medical Response, or AMR, for emergency and non-emergency medical transport services.&nbsp; La Mesa Fire Department works with the&nbsp; Burn Institute of San Diego and its Juvenile Firesetter Program, which educates and counsels children about the dangers of playing with fire.</p> <p>Station 11 is the city's busiest, responding to medical calls, structure fires, grass and brush blazes, vehicle fires and accidents, rescues and hazardous materials incidents.&nbsp; It also does public service work Station 13 houses a fire engine owned by the California Emergency Management&nbsp;Agency (Cal EMA).</p>
