San Diego International Airport SAN is the busiest single runway commercial airport that is approximately three miles from the San Diego city center. Southwest Airlines is the predominate airline at SAN comprising almost 40% of its traffic. San Diego Airport moves about 17 million passengers annually. San Diego Municipal Airport – Lindbergh Field opened in 1928 with two runways. In 1942, due to World War II, the Army Air Corps took it over and expanded the runways making them ready for future jets. By the 1950s however it returned to civilian travel for its main purpose.
Located just off I-5 (Pacific Highway), SAN Airport has several options for parking including hourly, daily, short-term, long-term, garage and valet. These options include: Terminal 1 Lot, Terminal 2 Lot, SAN Park NTC Lot, Commutter Terminal Lot, SAN Park Pacific Highway Lot and SAN Park Harbor Drive Lot.
San Diego International has 3 terminals (1, 2, Commuter) with 42 gates, all connected via walkway. International travel is handled in Terminal 2 and commuter traffic reserved for the Commuter Terminal.
There are over 25 airlines flying in and out of San Diego Airport to several domestic destinations and international destinations in Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan and Mexico. Inside the airport there is a variety of dining, retail and airport services for passengers. In terms of public transportation there is the Amtrak and Coaster commuter trains, the Metro Bus and Trolley Service. Additionally available is car rentals, taxis, limousines and luxury sedans.
