Established in 1905, the US Forest Service is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The agency manages public lands in national forests and grasslands. It conducts research on various topics, such as forestry, rangeland management and forest resource utilization. The US Forest Service also provides the scientific and technical knowledge. The agency offers community assistance and cooperation with state and local governments, forest industries and private landowners to protect and manage nonfederal forests and watershed lands. It works in partnerships with the Agency for International Development, U.S. Department of State and Environmental Protection Agency. The agency has a workforce of more than 30,000 employees. The US Forest Service maintains a location in Weaverville, Calif.
