San Francisco International Airport SFO is the 2nd busiest airport in California following Los Angeles International Airport. Situated approximately 13 miles south of San Francisco’s city center it is the largest and busiest airport serving the Bay Area. Currently, SFO Airport serves as a hub for United Airlines and Virgin America and serves about 45 million passengers annually. Making it the 12th busiest airport in the United States and the 20th busiest in the world. Originally SFO Airport opened as Mills Field Municipal Airport in 1927 and was renamed San Francisco Municipal Airport in 1931 and finally San Francisco International Airport in 1955.
