Connecticut is located in the northeastern US and the southernmost state in the New England region. It is bordered by Massachusetts to the north, Rhode Island to the east, the Long Island Sound to the south, and New York to the west. The state is named after the Connecticut River that runs through the state and comes from the Mohegan-Pequot word "Quononoquett" meaning "long tidal river." The rivers and ports throughout the state gave Connecticut a strong maritime tradition which continues today. One popular place to visit in the state is Mystic Seaport which is a recreated historical seaport village and one of the most prominent maritime museums in the United States. For a stunning piece of history, the Mark Twain House & Museum is a victorian masterpiece well preserved for tourism.
