The Killingworth Volunteer Fire Company, founded in 1946, provides fire, rescue, and haz-mat service to a 36-square-mile area with a population of roughly 6,500. This all-volunteer company with approximately 48 members operates as one company but maintains two fire stations. There are mutual-aid agreements with departments in Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Durham, Haddam, Madison and North Madison.
Station 1, built in 1971, is the main fire house and is located at 333 Route 81. Station 2, built in 1956, is the North end fire house and is located at 15 Little City Rd. The Killingworth Volunteer Fire Company provides fire suppression services and rescues related to car accidents, but the biggest activity is as a first responder to medical emergencies. Firefighters work closely with the Killingworth Ambulance Association and Middlesex Hospital paramedics.
