The Alexander Memorial Baptist Church of Georgetown was formed after a split among members of the First Baptist Church on Dumbarton Street in the early 1900s. The congregation formally formed July 6, 1908, and the members erected the church in 1909 on N Street. The church takes its name from the Reverend Sandy Alexander, a former slave, who founded several Baptist churches in D.C. The congregation meets on Sundays for worship and on Wednesdays for Bible study.
