The St. Lucie County Clerk of Court is a public trustee whose position was established by the Florida Constitution of 1838. In a study conducted by the Joint Select Committee on Judicial Personnel of the Legislature, it was calculated that the clerk's office performs more than 900 different constitutional and statutory functions or duties. These include acting as accountant and auditor for the board of county commissioners; collecting and distributing of statutory assessments; maintaining public records and court records; collecting court fines, fees and assessments; and acting as custodian of county funds.
