The Medical Center of Central Georgia is a private, nonprofit corporation owned by the Macon-Bibb Hospital Authority and affiliated with Secure Health Plans of Georgia, a network of central Georgia hospitals and physician providers. The Macon, Ga. Medical center began as a two-story, eight room brick residence in 1840 and has become a 603-bed, full-service, acute care hospital serving an estimated population of 750,000 residents and the second largest hospital in the state. Accredited by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the medical facility has a primary service area of 30 counties in central Georgia, including Bibb and the neighboring counties of Crawford, Houston, Jones, Monroe, Peach and Twiggs. The Medical Center typically treats patients from nearly 80 percent of the state s 159 counties. The hospital was the first to bring advanced surgical techniques to the region and now performs more than 36,000 surgical procedures annually. The surgery center features 20 state-of the- art operating suites, a comprehensive endodiagnostic center, a variety of specialty units for post-anesthesia care, outpatient care, and short-term care.
