History

Heather Heintz opened Balancing Monkey in 2004 with the support of Jennifer Weinert, Colee Garr and the Hilo Yoga community. For the next seven years it was located at 65 Mohouli Street in the upstairs of her home. The intention of Balancing Monkey has always been to create a place of sanctuary to practice opening, to gather, to share, to challenge, to exhale, to accept, to find out what makes us each uncomfortable, and to celebrate what it feels to be twisted and turned upside down. In 2011 we closed our studio on Mohouli Street to give space and time for the evolution of practice. In December 2012, a core group of teachers and students asked for a place to practice where yoga was the main intention of the space, where we can offer a full class schedule and bring diverse class offerings that are reflective of our community's needs. Danielle Lucia, Rachel Calvert, and Cherine Pai heard the calling and re-opened Balancing Monkey in December 2012.
