Berwyn is a city in Cook County, Illinois, co-existent with Berwyn Township, which was formed in 1908 after breaking off from Cicero Township. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 54,016.
As of the census of 2000, there were 54,016 people, 19,702 households, and 12,924 families residing in the city. The population density was 13,876.2 inhabitants per square mile (5,361.4/km²). There were 20,691 housing units at an average density of 5,315.3 per square mile (2,053.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 73.44% White, 1.30% African American, 0.44% Native American, 2.59% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 18.59% from other races, and 3.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 38% of the population, with Mexican Americans representing 31.0%. Non-Hispanic whites were 56.42% of the population.
