Heart of America Restaurants & Inns is a company that owns and operates nearly 30 restaurants and hotels in ten metropolitan areas of six Midwestern states. Founded by entrepreneur Mike Whalen in 1978, the business began with a 100-seat coffee shop in Davenport, Iowa. The restaurants were built around varying concepts with The Machine Shed Restaurants as the flagship. The original 100-seats blossomed into the second highest volume restaurant in the state, second only to his other Machine Shed Restaurant. Heart of America operates Comfort Suites, Radisson, Wildwood Lodge, Sleep Inn and Comfort Inn hotels and motels in Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin and Minnesota. It operates Machine Shed Restaurants in seven locations, Johnny s Italian Steakhouse in five locations, Thunder Bay Grille, The Checkered Flag Bar and Grille, and Gramma s Kitchen restaurants in several locations.
