Arlington Park is a horse racing track with a history spanning more than eighty years. Founded in 1927, the park managed to survive the austerity of the Great Depression. It hosted the world's first million-dollar race, called The Arlington Million, during which jockey Bill Shoemaker rode John Henry to a victory that beat 40-1 odds. In July of 1985, the park's grandstand and much of the facility itself burned to the ground. A temporary park was constructed in time to host the "Miracle Million" less than a month later. The park has gone on to host many more events, including the International Festival of Racing. Arlington Park merged with Churchill Downs Incorporated in 2000 and today, continues to offer horse racing and betting to fans of the sport from all around the Midwest.
