The Great Plains Wing, formerly known as the Nebraska Squadron, has been a prominent presence in the Omaha Council Bluffs area since 1984. Originally meeting at the Strategic Air Command Museum, the squadron played a key role in the restoration of iconic aircraft such as the C-47, B-17, B-25, and B-29.

With the construction of a new hangar at the Council Bluffs airport in 1988, the Great Plains Wing established a museum and meeting room to showcase its impressive collection. The addition of the P-51 Gunfighter in 1990 further solidified the wing's commitment to preserving aviation history alongside its L-3 and L-5 aircraft.
