The Sac County Freedom Rock, located in Sac City, IA, is a unique tribute to our nation's Veterans. This large boulder, weighing over 60 tons, is repainted annually by artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II with a different message of gratitude for our Veterans.
Inspired by the movie "Saving Private Ryan," Sorensen embarked on this heartfelt project in 1999 to honor Veterans on Memorial Day. With the support of donations, Sorensen paints the rock each year as a labor of love, not for commission.
Besides the iconic boulder in rural Iowa, Sorensen has extended his vision through the Freedom Rock Tour, bringing smaller versions to each of Iowa's 99 counties. The project has now expanded to a 50 State Freedom Rock Tour, spreading the message of gratitude across the country.
