The Salvation Army of Central Kentucky is a nonprofit organization that provides shelter, food and financial services to homeless individuals and low-income families. The organization s emergency assistance program offers a variety of emergency aids, such as food, clothing, prescription drugs, personal care kits, household items and school supplies. Located in Lexington, Ky., it operates a 132-bed emergency shelter for families and single women. The Salvation Army of Central Kentucky also provides case management, referral and counseling services. The organization offers Bible study and spiritual counseling and child care and after-school programs. It is a part of The Salvation Army, which is a church and social service organization. The parent organization, founded in 1865 to help the impoverished in London s East End, has functioned worldwide for more than 140 years. As of 2005, the Christian charity has expanded to include more than 100 countries, and the gospel is preached by its officers in more than 160 languages. It includes several day care centers, summer camps, medical facilities, food pantries, soup kitchens, and career counseling and vocational training centers.
