Maine is a state in the northeastern part of the United States. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, New Hampshire to the west, and Canada to the north and northwest. The capital is Augusta. Portland is the biggest city in Maine. It became a state in 1820, when it was separated from Massachusetts. People fish for lobsters and other sea creatures. Tourists visit Maine because it has many beaches and pretty coastal towns. The southern part of Maine has most of the people; the northern part has fewer people. Canada is to the north and east of Maine. The Atlantic Ocean is to the south and west of Maine. Quebec is to Maine's northwest, across the St. Lawrence River. Maine is both the northernmost state in New England and the largest, accounting for almost half its land area. It is also the only state in New England that borders just one other US state (New Hampshire). The northernmost city in Maine is called Estcourt Station.
