Mountain Motor racers have called Maryland International Raceway home for quite some time. Now the organization that features these monstrous machines will join Maryland International Raceway in a display of raw power on the quarter mile. Friday and Saturday, May 14th and 15th the MMPSA will descend upon MIR for the 32nd annual Outback Steakhouse Mountain Motor Nationals. "The Mountain Motor Nationals is one of the longest running events in Pro Stock history, relayed Tommy Dupree of the MMPSA. When Royce came to us and asked if we would like to be a part of it, we jumped at the chance. He was the first track to offer us a place to race and we owe him a lot. MIR is known for the best door car racing in the country. The fans are in for a real treat with the MMPSA and the NEOPMA Pro Mods together at the same event. It will be very hard for me to not just be a spectator! Heavy hitters such as the 2009 IHRA Pro Stock World Champion John Montecalvo, Cary and Dean Goforth, Bob Bertsch, Canadians Larry O'Brien and John Konigshofer, Pete Berner and more will be on hand all vying for the 2010 Mountain Motor Nationals crown. Bob Bertsch was runner up at the MMPSA's first ever event just a few short weeks ago at Rockingham Dragway. He has come into his own in the last year and has made it known that he's a force to be reckoned with. Runner up at the IHRA President's Nationals last fall and with a storied history at MIR, Bertsch is confident and driven going into this event, and will be going after his first Mountain Motor Nationals crown. I have always enjoyed racing at MIR, because of the track and the track personnel, told Bertsch. We can always count on the track being prepared well. The weather in the spring and fall always produce almost mineshaft conditions [ 1.00 correction factor ] that the Mountain Motor Pro Stock engines love. At MIR in 2007, the Rislone Mustang achieved its fastest run at 6.3000 seconds, just missing the 6.20 Club, and last year we made our second consecutive final round there. Even though I enjoy racing at MIR, there is some sadness because on June 13, 2008, John Weisler, a dear friend and crew member died at the track due to a medical issue. His presence is still with me in the car every time I go down any track, but his presence when I am at MIR is surreal. I am very proud to be a part of the MMPSA and was extremely happy with the way things progressed in our first event at Rockingham. The members of this Association are outstanding individuals and highly competitive and it's a real pleasure to be a part of the inaugural year. The event is host not only to the MMPSA, but also the 1320 Pro Mod Warriors, Outlaw Drag Radials, and a $5000 to win guaranteed bracket race each day. Pro Stocks will have three qualifying rounds on Friday with a fourth and final session on Saturday with eliminations to follow. Pro Stock is the NASCAR of drag racing, stated Royce Miller, President and Promoter of Maryland International Raceway. Pro Stocks and Pro Mods have a long and rich history here and the MIR fans love fast doorslammers. MIR was the first track to commit to an event date with the newly formed Mountain Motor Pro Stock Association and we are thrilled to have them compete with us. As a matter of fact this year's Outback Steakhouse Mountain Motor Nationals will be one of only two races in the nation that you can see 800ci Mountain Motor Pro Stocks and the quickest Pro Mods in the country at the same event on the full quarter mile. As a fan of drag racing this is one event I personally can't wait to see.
