The Michigan Education Association is a self-governing education association that represents more than 157,000 teachers, faculty and education support staff throughout Michigan. It is composed of more than 1,200 local associations that represent individual K-12 school districts and higher education facilities. The association is dedicated to the purpose of serving members employment goals, interests and needs, while advocating for quality public education. It is also committed to creating and maintaining an effective education system that supports the development of successful students; advances the principles of democracy, human and civil rights; meets the needs of global society and improves the quality of life for its members. The Michigan Education Association was founded in 1852 and is headquartered in East Lansing, Mich.
