When the disastrous fires swept through Chicago in 1871, Challenge Machinery Company was kept from being wiped out due to the quick thinking of a partner and foundry foreman. The two men loaded master electrotype cuts and important books and papers onto a horse drawn wagon and drove them to safety in the knee-deep waters of Lake Michigan. Challenge Machinery Company designs, manufactures and markets paper handling and paper management equipment. The paper cutters produced by Challenge include programmable and manual versions of the Champion, Titan and Spartan series. Challenge Machinery s paper drill line includes the MS-5 Multi-Spindle Drill, EH-3C Three Spindle Drill and the JO Single Spindle Drill. The Medalist 870 paper folder, Challenge Cornering Machine and CMT 330 Three-Knife Trimmer are also a part of the company s product line. Founded in 1870, Challenge Machinery Company was originally known as Shniedewend & Lee.
