Michigan is one of the fifty states in the United States of America. It is the 11th largest state by area in the United States. It is made up of two peninsulas connected by the Mackinac Bridge. It borders the U.S. states of Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota, and Illinois. Its borders with Canada, Minnesota and Illinois are only by water known as the Great Lakes. It was the 26th state to join the union on January 26, 1837. Michigan is noted as the place where many automobiles were made, and still is a main production hub for the auto industry today. Michigan is one-half forest, which makes it very useful to the lumber industry. It also borders four of the Great Lakes, which are some of the largest reservoirs of fresh water in the world. In the northern tip of Lake Huron is Mackinac Island, a top tourist destination for its rich history, stunning natural beauty like Arch Rock, Skull Cave and Dwightwood Freshwater Springs. Unlike the rest of the state motorized vehicles are not allowed on this islans which is part of the draw, helping to clean air, and get residents out and about by foot, horse or bicycle.
