Founded in 1966, Mississippi Action for Progress is a nonprofit, community-based child development and family services program for preschool children of low-income families. It offers services to infants, toddlers and expectant mothers. The agency, also known as MAP, manages human resource affairs, materials and equipment, and research and development programs. Mississippi Action for Progress maintains a partnership with local health departments, colleges and universities, public schools, state officials, government agencies, and commerce and civic organizations. It has a staff of more than 1,200 employees, including administrators, directors, managers, coordinators, specialists and other support personnel. Additionally, the agency offers various educational programs for adults. Mississippi Action for Progress serves more than 20 counties and operates over 40 head start centers in Mississippi.
