KCPT is a nonprofit corporation that owns the license to operate both analog and digital television Channel 19. Its offices and production facilities are housed in Kansas City, Mo. Established in 1961, as an instructional television station owned and operated by the Kansas City Missouri School District, it changed hands in 1972, when the district chose to relinquish its broadcast license, and a group of civic leaders established a nonprofit agency, to create a public television station for Kansas City and its surrounding areas.
