Established in 1967, Federal Highway Administration is a cabinet-level organization of the executive branch of the United States government. It employs a staff of more than 2,800 people, including lawyers, quality experts, engineers, administrators, planners, safety specialists, environmentalists, statisticians and economists. The administration provides technical assistance in the areas of civil rights, finance, office and training management, and program and quality coordination. It also offers financial assistance to state and local governments for constructing, preserving and improving the National Highway System. In addition, Federal Highway Administration provides funds for public roads and highways within federally owned and tribal lands. Located in Albany, N.Y., it also conducts safety research, technology and outreach projects. Additionally, the administration supports various wetland banking, habitat restoration, historic preservation and air quality improvements programs. Federal Highway Administration has operations in more than 50 locations throughout the United States and is a part of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
