Monroe County Sheriff's Office, founded in 1821, offers law enforcement and public safety services. It has civil, court security, jail and police bureaus. Its court security bureau is responsible for weapons screening and maintaining courtroom decorum to provide essential public safety and law enforcement services. The court security bureau also guards, transports and isolates sequestered juries. Monroe County Sheriff's Office s jail bureau operates three facilities, including a pretrial detention facility that houses more than 1,000 inmates; sentencing facility in Brighton, N.Y., which houses over 475 sentenced inmates; and regional forensic unit at Rochester Psychiatric Center. Its police bureau provides road patrol and criminal investigation services. The police bureau has several specialized units, such as special weapons and tactics, hazardous devices squad, strategic traffic accident reduction, scuba team, marine and mounted patrol, and canine, motorcycle and snowmobile units.
