The Division of Law Enforcement protects the natural resources, environment and people of the state of New York. The division offers a variety of law enforcement and educational programs. It is a part of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which is responsible for the conservation, improvement and protection of natural resources within New York. Founded in 1970, the department manages the Adirondack and Catskill Forest Preserve lands. It also preserves forest lands and wildlife management areas. DEC is also responsible for regulating various activities, including skiing, camping, boating, hiking, hunting and trapping within the state. The department maintains more than 15 divisions. It additionally preserves animals, plants and aquatic life.
