Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, located in Niskayuna, N.Y., is a U.S. government-owned, contractor-operated research and development facility that supports the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. The program is a joint program of the U.S. Navy and the Department of Energy. It is responsible for the research, design, construction, operation and maintenance of nuclear-powered warships. The laboratory is operated for the Department of Energy by APL, a company of Lockheed Martin Corp. KAPL employees develop advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provide technical support for the safe and reliable operation of existing naval reactors, and provide training to naval personnel who operate them. The company employs more than 2,600 people at two sites, in Niskayuna and in West Milton, N.Y. Small contingents of KAPL field personnel also support nuclear work at shipyards in Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Virginia and Washington.
