The Watkins Glen, N.Y., refinery of US Salt is located on the shore of Seneca Lake and has been in business for more than 100 years. Wells at the refinery extend into the earth s crust more than a half mile to tap a deposit of underground salt. The deposit extends from Madison County in the east to Erie County in the west and also spreads into Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan and Ontario. The salt was discovered in 1882, when the Watkins Oil Well Company reported that at nearly 1,513 feet below the surface it had reached a sufficient flow of brine to make salt. The company s product applications are utilized in a variety of industries that include food processing, pharmaceuticals, water conditioning, industrial, agriculture, and textiles and dyes. The salt production includes production, pressing, bagging and packaging salt. US Salt is located in Watkins Glen and is a part of US Salt Holdings.
