<p>The Yorktown Police Department is responsible for protecting life and property, preventing crime, enforcing local, state and federal laws, anticipating and responding to events that threaten public order or citizens' quality of life, locating of missing people, and recovery of lost and stolen property.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Police Department was created on May 31, 1927, under the administration of James N. Strang. Today, the Yorktown Police Department covers over 40 square miles and nearly 40,000 residents.</p> <p>Chief of Police is Daniel M. McMahon, who has served with the Yorktown Police Department for 25 years. He was promoted to the position of Chief of Police on April 5, 2005.</p> <p>The Department is comprised of three divisions:</p> <p>The Patrol Division is the Department's largest and most active division. It is made up of approximately 40 officers and supervisors. It is responsible for the 24 hour patrol of Yorktown streets and response to calls for service. Patrol officers are also directly responsible for the enforcement of State and local laws and ordinances. The department is under the command of Lt. Robert Noble</p> <p>The Detective Bureau is responsible for the prevention of crime and the investigation of criminal cases in the town, detention and arrest of criminal offenders, locating of missing people, recovery of lost and stolen property, proper cooperation with authorities, and proper conduct of fugitive requisition proceedings. The bureau is under the supervision of Sgt. Kurt Gullery.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Staff Services Division is responsible for the business and facilities operations of the Department. The Staff Services Division handles records management, communications, payroll, permits, headquarters maintenance, equipment and supplies, automation service, and animal control.
