January 2002, McGowan Painting Contractors of Greenville, NC opened for business providing painting services to clients in the residential, commercial and industrial markets. McGowan's market area then encompassed Eastern North Carolina. Joel Bunch, Senior estimator and Russell Summerfield, Senior project manager, former employees of a regional well-established commercial and industrial painting firm joined Bob McGowan in this quest. Bob concurrently continued to operate a similar business in Charlotte for many years. Along with Bob, Joel and Russell brought over one hundred years of collective knowledge and experience to the firm. Bob subsequently retired from the Greenville business and sold ownership to a group of employee owners while allowing the firm to retain his name. New employee ownership implemented management and accountability changes, including specialized construction accounting software and streamlined operating procedures. Justin Miller joined the firm in 2007 as general manager, with the focus of growth and improvement for the company. An emphasis on the newer organization was to diversify the organization, providing painting services in not only residential and commercial markets, but placing an emphasis on industrial markets, with sandblasting and application of specialized industrial coatings. The company has completed numerous industrial projects, including several waste water treatment facilities in the last three years. In addition, the company acquired the franchise for acoustic and thermal spray insulation from International Cellulose Corporation. Along with this they have recently trained and applied spray textured coatings by Triarch for the hotel industry. Their regional base has expanded into Central North Carolina, the Outer Banks of North Carolina and into Tidewater Virginia, and the diversity of the organization continues to expand.
