Established in 1961, Bay Leaf Fire Department is a private, nonprofit, Incident Response Service 501 organization, governed and managed by an elected board of directors. Bay Leaf offers fire protection to more than 15 million-square-feet of residential and commercial properties through a contract with Wake County, N.C., and under the guidelines of the North Carolina Department of Insurance. The department employs more than 95 professional volunteer and career firefighters that offer an array of services, including emergency medical services, hazardous material operations, confined space rescue, vehicle extrication, cold water and high-angle rescue. Its members participate in the North Carolina Firefighter's Certification program and First Responder-Defibrillator program. Located in Raleigh, N.C., Bay Leaf Fire Department utilizes Pierce fire engines.
