North Carolina is a state in the southeastern United States. It borders Virginia to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Georgia and South Carolina to the south, and Tennessee to the west. The capital of North Carolina is Raleigh while Charlotte is its largest city. The earliest discoveries of human occupation date back to 10,000 years ago and were made by Paleo-Indians who lived across different parts of what would later become North Carolina. The name Carolina or Carolus is Latin for "Charles" the king, King Charles I of England who first formed the English colony making it one of the original thirteen colonies of the US. On November 21, 1789, North Carolina ratified the Constitution to become the 12th state in the Union. North Carolina is the 28th largest state in overall landmass. There is much to do in North Carolina for every season.
