AVID, also known as Advancement via Individual Determination, is a college preparatory program for middle and high school students. The program includes academic preparation for college, organizational and study skills, writing exercises, personal development activities and career education. Students are selected to the AVID program based on their grades, discipline and attendance records and their desire for college education. The program serves students in grades 5 through 12. AVID was initiated by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in 1997 and three of its middle schools are AVID national demonstration sites.
