Founded by Andrew Cuomo in 1986 and recognized by the United States Congress as a national model, HELP USA is one of the country s largest builders and operators of service-enriched transitional and low-income permanent housing. The nonprofit organization maintains nearly 20 residential communities in the New York metropolitan area and has expanded into Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Houston and Buffalo, N.Y. Its continuum of services includes employment training and placement, life skills education, child care and domestic violence counseling. In response to growing homelessness among families with children, HELP USA has developed early childhood education programs, enhanced after-school programs and created mentoring programs. The organization also has an academic scholarship program for survivors of domestic abuse and their children. Its housing and on-site support services seek to enable residents to become independent and productive.
