Hand Middle School is a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence recognized by the Department of Education and recipient of the Carolina First Palmetto's Finest award. The school serves students in grade six through eight and has an enrollment of more than 900 students. It offers educational programs in fine and performing arts, business, computer science, English, family and consumer sciences, foreign language, history and social sciences, mathematics, music, physical education, reading and science. It has athletic teams in volleyball, basketball, soccer, swimming, wrestling, football, baseball, golf and track and field. The school also provides several extracurricular activities, such as mock trial, greenhouse club, student council, student forum, violence and substance abuse council, chess club, yearbook and student ambassadors. Hand Middle School is a part of the Richland 1 School District and is located in Columbia, S.C.
