Black Hills National Forest is spread over an area of more than 125 miles. It features rugged rock formations, canyons and gulches, grassland parks, streams, lakes, caves reservoirs, campgrounds and picnic areas. The forest provides maps and brochures, as well as publishes a range of articles on wildlife-related issues. Black Hills National Forest offers a variety of recreational opportunities, such as hiking, fishing, hunting, horse riding, camping, biking and shooting for visitors and tourists. Additionally, the forest provides various volunteer opportunities. It is a part of the U.S. Forest Service, which is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Established in 1897, Black Hills National Forest offers conservation education assistance and teaching materials. The forest provides habitats for several fish, bird, animal and rare plant species.
