Inside each floatation tank is 600-800 pounds of pharmaceutical grade Epsom salt dissolved in 250 gallons of skin temperature water (93.5 degrees). The water in the tank is only 10 inches deep and so dense that you float like a cork with your face and front part of your body out of the water. The tanks have doors that can be closed by each floater so that the parts of your body that are out of the water don’t get cooler than the parts that are underwater. The buoyancy of the water makes it impossible for you to flip over or be submerged. The term Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (or REST) is used to describe the physical process that underlies floatation. The floatation tank drastically reduces outside environmental stimulation – gravity, temperature, touch, sight, and sound. The effects of the tank greatly lessen tension on the muscles, nervous system, sense organs, and brain, which allows the body and mind to enter deep levels of relaxation in a short amount of time.
