Coffield Unit, operational since 1965, is a prison that has a capacity of more than 3,500 male offenders. The unit employs a staff of over 800 people and conducts a variety of agricultural, manufacturing and logistics operations. It offers a range of ambulatory medical, dental and mental health care services. The unit maintains a physical therapy clinic, farm shop, feed mill and grain storage facility. Coffield Unit administers several adult basic and special education programs. The unit also operates English as a Second Language and cognitive intervention programs. Coffield Unit is a part of the Correctional Institutions Division, which is operated by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
