Charles Ericsson, M.D., was inspired to become a physician by a Harvard professor who was a Nobel Laureate. He made biology fun, said Ericsson, professor of internal medicine at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. I decided to specialize in infectious disease because I wanted to be a medical detective. In this field, you get immediate gratification because you are able to cure most people.Dr. Ericsson, who is also the director of the travel medicine clinic, has conducted clinical studies on travelers diarrhea in Guadalajara, Mexico. These research studies, as well as his upbringing as an Army brat, naturally segued into an interest in travel medicine.Dr. Ericsson is the founder and editor-in-chief of The Journal of Travel Medicine and past president of the International Society of Travel Medicine. He is also heavily involved in hospital infection control and antibiotic approval programs and directs the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Training Program at UTHealth.
