Dolph Briscoe Unit

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice governs the Correctional Institutions Division, which manages a unit, Briscoe. Established in 1992, the unit houses up to 1,340 male offenders. The facility spreads across an area of more than 420 acres and employs over 300 staff members. It includes a furniture factory and conducts various agricultural operations. Briscoe offers ambulatory medical and dental services. The facility provides a range of educational opportunities in the areas of landscape design, construction, carpentry, technology and electrical trade for inmates. It also offers special education classes, as well as administers the English as a Second Language program. Briscoe coordinates with several agencies and school districts.
