Started in 1992 by Bonnie and Ched Ruetenik, Heather Hill Gardens is truly one of Fairfax Station's local gems. The nursery, set on the property of the Rueteniks' charming Victorian home, offers a selection of annuals, perennials, herbs, and even tropical plants. Visitors can chose from a selection of seasonal fruits, vegetables and locally-produced jams and jellies, but the real draw here is the helpful, friendly staff who "have over 100 years collective gardening experience," and are glad to provide advice on virtually any question a gardener may have; including landscaping specific to Northern Virginia, organic gardening techniques and deer-resistant planting strategies.

Heather Hill offers a "Fall Fest" annually. Sure to delight children and adults alike, the pumpkin patch offers an intimate petting zoo and a wide array of games, tubes, slides, swings and a playhouse. The environment here is both fun and relaxed, and is especially appropriate for younger children. Admission to the Fall Fest is $5. School and other groups are welcome, but are encouraged to make reservations in advance.
