Founded in 1985, the Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter is a private, nonprofit organization that is funded by the United Way, government grants and private donations. It offers temporary emergency shelter, meal and emotional support services to women and children who escape domestic violence and abuse. The organization also provides legal services that include assistance with filing charges, advocacy on behalf of child victims of violence, as well as court representation for women in custody and child and spousal support hearings. It offers domestic violence counseling, crisis intervention, outreach and residential services. The Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter also provides supervised visitation and peer support group services and conducts several recreational activities for children. Additionally, it offers a teen violence prevention program that focuses on countywide prevention and educational activities for school-age children.
