Established under the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, Selective Service System works to provide manpower to the armed forces. It runs alternative services programs for men classified as conscientious objectors during a draft. Headquartered in Arlington, Va., the agency has a work force of more than 300 employees, including force officers and state directors. Selective Service System has over authorized 10,000 part-time volunteer local, district and national board members. It also identifies agencies and associations that assist in placing conscientious objectors in alternative service jobs. The agency additionally provides online information about several legislations.
